Hues of Pride

Updated: May 20, 2022

’Tis the charm that swayed me,

Whilst gazing into your amber eyes

A suppressed emotion engendered free -

We are more than just amiable allies;

The world is besotted with a discriminatory decree,

That can’t bear love betwixt two guys.

’Tis your buoyancy that keeps me from sinking

To the depths of self-disparagement and doubt,

The pall of gloom that shrouds our thinking -

Imposed by inherent homophobia throughout,

All it does is exacerbate the feeling of shrinking;

Notwithstanding, our hearts are evermore stout.

Doesn’t matter whether it’s a stranger or a peer,

The stares are all the same - warily condescending;

For their beliefs are entrenched in a narrow sphere -

Neither amenable to vary nor transcending

The walls of conservatism to accept any queer,

Alas! This imbecility seems never-ending.

I wonder why is it that they’re so averse

To be as courteous to us as before,

It’s not like we’re born with some curse;

Our identities are not something to abhor -

Humanity’s beauty lies in being diverse

Not in staying relentlessly hardcore.

Have no doubt, solidarity does mean a lot,

But it can never mask the hideous scar

Or any historical erring previously wrought,

But tiny steps to remove the oppressive bar

Can put us in a favourable & genial spot;

Irrespective of what we face, we’re proud of who we are.
